Workshop Overview
In this intimate 3-day workshop, you’ll join Stanley in Crozet, VA to explore the essentials of oil painting in a hands-on, guided environment. Whether you're just starting out or looking to deepen your practice, this course offers a personalized hands on approach. You'll gain a deeper, more confident understanding of oil painting techniques and materials.
What You’ll Learn
Foundations of oil painting: color mixing, brush handling, and material use
Techniques in layering, glazing, and the safest ways to paint
Step-by-step guidance toward completing a small finished oil painting
An in depth exploration of realism, with advanced techniques in capturing light and shadow.
About the Instructor
Stanley Rayfield is an award-winning portrait artist celebrated for his emotionally powerful, narrative oil paintings and highly realistic technique. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts, his work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and is part of the permanent collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He was commissioned to paint the official portrait of Virginia’s 73rd Governor and has also sold artwork to Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee.
